Anxiety in Texas as Drug Cartel Violence Rises North From Mexico

March 5, 2009

South Texas is already reporting increased in violence spreading north from Mexican drug cartels. This report from the Dallas Morning News looks at whether or not North Texas should also be preparing for the worst.

Drug cartels out of Mexico are major operations ran by violent people with one main interest, making money through large scale drug operations. If this interest ends in the death, kidnappings, or injuries of many, they don’t seem to care. If someone stands between the cartels and their money they may suffer dire consequences.

Although the Gulf cartel is said to control the supply of cocaine into Dallas, they have remained somewhat quiet over the last several years. This, apparently, is to avoid attracting attention to their large scale operations.

In Mexico, these cartels are often linked with kidnappings, torture, and beheadings and officials are frightened that this extreme violence could make its way North. According to this article, Phoenix reported over 300 kidnappings, many of which are believed to be drug related.

In an effort to keep drug charges and conviction numbers straight when determining if there is cartel influence in North Texas, officials look at the people behind the crimes. Those involving multiple, high-level defendants are more likely to be connected to the cartels. Other smaller operations are obvious both in the approaches as well as the amount of drugs and weapons they are working with.

Because North Texas departments are very well informed about the cartels and constantly on the lookout for their influence in local crime, it is not likely that the majority of drug charges coming out of the region will be seen as directly connected to the Mexican cartels.

You can count on, however, the judges, police, and prosecution, being very cautious to ensure that drug crimes and the violence that sometimes follows them remain at a minimum in Dallas and other North Texas communities.

Being charged with possession or even manufacturing or delivery of drugs can be extremely frightening. Knowing you have retained an experienced attorney on your side is a crucial factor in your confidence when you go before the judge.
